Ingredients :

17.3 oz sheets of puff pastry (2 bags of frozen sheets – defrost in package directions)
21 oz cherry pie filling (21 oz jar)
¼ cup confectioners’ sugar (optional garnish)

Instructions :

Defrost puff pastry sheets by placing them at room temperature for about 40 minutes before making.

Preheat oven to 400°F (205°C) and line a baking tray with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.
On a lightly floured work surface, roll out sheets of puff pastry (one at a time) to just under an inch thick. Use a double set of metal heart-shaped cookie molds, one larger than the other, to cut hearts out of the sheets of dough.

From the larger heart, cut out 8 hearts on the sheet. On half of these hearts, also cut out the inner heart (to make the outline of the heart).

Place the larger whole hearts on the baking sheet and lay the outline of the heart on top. Repeat the same with the second sheet of puff pastry.

Bake the puff pastry hearts at 400° F. (205°F) for 15-20 minutes or until light golden. When done, take it out of the oven and gently press the center of the dough core to make a depression. Then allow the pastry to cool slightly before filling.

Once cooled, fill the recess of each dough heart with a large portion of the cherry pie filling. If desired, sprinkle with confectioners’ sugar and serve.

Notes :

You can flip the sliced puff pastry sheets to make more if you like.
Canned cherry pie filling will fill a double baking recipe.
Pie filling is great because it is thick, but you can also use jams, jellies or jam.
Another filling is fresh fruit.
Macerated strawberries are a favorite (mix chopped berries with sugar and lemon juice + zest if you like, stir and set aside for about 30 minutes while baking).
